Classic Traditional Customs:

Eating Zongzi (Sticky Rice Dumplings)

Glutinous rice wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves, stuffed with fillings. 

Salty fillings: pork, salted egg yolk, mushrooms.

Sweet fillings: red bean paste, jujube, lotus seedPeople eat zongzi to commemorate Qu Yuan.

Hanging Mugwort and Calamus

Families hang these herbs on door frames. Ancient Chinese believed they could repel mosquitoes, evil spirits and summer illnesses.

Wearing Five-color Silk Threads

Parents tie red, yellow, blue, white and black threads on children's wrists and ankles, wishing them safety and good health through the hot summer.

Drinking Realgar Wine

A traditional custom to ward off poisons and bugs (rare for kids now, as realgar contains arsenic).

Dragon Boat Racing (Dragon Boat Regatta)

Long, narrow boats decorated with dragon heads race on rivers.
