ASTM A312 is a standard specification for seamless, welded, and heavily cold-worked austenitic stainless steel pipes intended for high-temperature, high-pressure, and corrosive service applications.
As a molybdenum-bearing, low-carbon austenitic stainless steel, TP316L upgrades TP304’s corrosion resistance by adding 2.0–3.0% molybdenum and limiting carbon content to ≤0.03%.
TP316L Key Characteristics
1. Excellent Weldability
2. Superior Corrosion Resistance
*The key differentiator from TP304—molybdenum enhances resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in chloride-rich environments (e.g., seawater, brine, chemical process streams).
*The carbon content is limited to 0.03% max, which eliminates the risk of sensitization (chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries) during welding or prolonged high-temperature exposure.
*Resists general corrosion in atmospheric, aqueous, and mild acidic/alkaline environments.
3. Good High-Temperature Performance
*TP316L maintains mechanical strength and oxidation resistance at temperatures up to 870°C (1600°F), suitable for high-temperature process piping and exhaust systems.
4. Favorable Mechanical Properties
5. Biocompatibility and Hygiene
*TP316L is non-toxic, non-reactive, and easy to sanitize, making it a preferred material for food and beverage processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, and medical device components.
